Louis Moore Bacon To Receive Audubon Medal

Medal

In January 2013 one of the biggest gala events in the world of conservation will be taking place in the ballroom at The Plaza Hotel in New York, NY. The first of its kind, a join celebration to award and recognize two exceptional conservationists and presenting them with the Audubon Medal and the Dan W. Lufkin prize for Environmental Leadership.

The medal is presented to someone who is recognized as having made outstanding achievements in the field of conservation and environmental protection, it's one the highest honors to receive this in the conservation world. In Audubon's 107 year history only 51 people have been awarded this medal, and Louis Bacon will be added to the list, joining others such as  Walt Disney, Rachel Carson, Ted Turner, Edward O. Wilson, Jimmy Carter and the Rockefeller family.

He is being awarded the medal in recognition of his significant and diverse efforts to preserve and protect important natural ecosystems through his charity The Moore Charitable Foundation and other conservationist activities. For over 20 years Louis Bacon has advocated the importance of conservation, and worked with over 100 projects to protect land and water in Colorado, Connecticut, North Carolina, and New York. Because of his passion for conversation he's helped preserve Clifton Point in the Bahamas which enabled 208 acres of Bahamian land to be used by its people - it is now Clifton Heritage National Park. Other projects include Robins Island, Springer’s Point, Tern Island, and the Everglades Foundation which protects Florida wetlands from pollution. He is also a founding member of Audubon’s Rachel Carson Women in Conservation Award Council, and also founded Waterkeeper Alliance, of which he is the most significant funder.

Over the years his unwaivering commitment to preservation, conservation, and wildlife is what has earned him this honor. In 2010 he was named the Colorado Association of Conservation Districts’ Ranch Conservationist of the Year.

The Audubon gala evening will be hosted by former NBC anchor Tom Brokaw, there will be a performance by legendary entertainer Bette Midler, and speakers throughout the night including Audubon’s President and CEO, David Yarnold; Audubon’s Board Chair, Holt Thrasher III; and Dan Lufkin. It is a charity gala event, with all proceeds going to support Audubon’s hemispheric bird conservation priorities.
